History:

The Messerschmitt Bf 110D/E was a German twin-engine heavy fighter used during World War II. Designed as a long-range escort fighter, the Bf 110 was part of the Luftwaffe’s Zerstörer (destroyer) concept. The Bf 110D variant, nicknamed the “Dackelbauch” (Dachshund belly), featured an auxiliary fuel tank to extend its range, particularly for missions over the North Sea and during the Battle of Britain. However, this increased weight made it vulnerable to more agile single-engine fighters like the Spitfire and Hurricane.

The Bf 110E variant followed, with improved engine power and armament to address earlier weaknesses. This version was used more effectively in ground-attack and bomber-destroyer roles. Reinforced wings and bomb-carrying capability allowed it to serve as a fighter-bomber, often called the “Jabo” (jagdbomber).

Despite struggles in dogfights, the Bf 110 excelled as a night fighter, intercepting Allied bombers with advanced radar and heavy armament. The Bf 110D/E reflected the Luftwaffe’s ability to adapt, despite limitations as a day fighter.

Kits:

For the Me 110D and E, only two mold sets exist, produced by Eduard and Cyber Hobby. Eduard’s Me 110, first released in 2007, has been re-boxed multiple times in various versions. Cyber Hobby’s new tool Me 110D came out in 2010, followed by the 110E in 2014, which Dragon re-boxed in 2020.

Decal Instructions:

This decal sheet is an updated version of Iliad Design’s earlier release, numbered 48016a. It includes the same four options, plus one new subject, bringing the total to five. The instructions are printed on a double-sided, semi-glossy color sheet. One side features port views of each aircraft with detailed descriptions of their unique color schemes. These include three European schemes: RLM70-71-65, RLM71-02-65, and RLM 74-75-76, as well as a desert scheme in RLM 79-78, and an overall black night fighter. This side also provides additional details, such as spinner colors, fuel tanks, and dinghy storage compartments.

One notable subject is the aircraft flown by Deputy Führer Rudolf Hess to Scotland in May 1941 during his failed peace mission. The reverse side of the instruction sheet displays top views of the aircraft and detailed underwing decal placements. It also provides further instructions on color schemes and other specific details.

The Decals:

The decal sheet measures 5.5 x 8.5 inches (140 x 210 mm). The backing film is minimal, visible only where necessary for text alignment. The colors are vibrant and precisely aligned.
