Greenstrawbery has released two kits for the 1:420 scale U.S.S. Defiant. One of the kits is produced for the engines and exterior and the other is for the hangars of the ship. In this review, we will take a look at the kit produced for the engines and exterior. In a previous article, we took a look at the alternate set. You can find it here on Hobby Link International.
As always the Greenstrawberry set comes in a cardboard box that has a photo of the kit, kit number, and description on the front. The sides just have decorative patterns and the back of the box has a warning and Greenstrawberry’s website. The box contains instructions, 2 phot-etch frets, 27 resin pieces, and 15 transparent resin pieces. The parts are packaged well but I would have liked to have seen the resin parts packaged in resealable bags.
The first thing we took a look at was the instructions. As in the usual Greenstrawberry fashion, they start with a sketch of the contents of the kit. The sketch shows you where to cut the pour stubs of the resin these places are marked in red. Then it goes into the information key so you can easily identify what has to be done at certain points of assembly. The instructions, for the most part, are easy to understand and follow along. One part of the instructions step 5 could be separated a little more to read them better. I know there is cost savings involved but adding a sheet or two more to the unstructions for clarity is well worth the cost.
The photo-etch fret that comes with the kit is the A+ etch we always expect from Greenstrawberry. The photo-etch is nicely detailed in the areas it needs to be. Greenstrawberry always does a great job on small fine parts and they nailed it again with this kit. The set comes with some serious detail. This specific includes all phaser arrays, all surface vents, warp engines grills, impulse engines inner ring, new main bridge surface detail, main engineering surface detail, and bussard collectors strips. The set is not a difficult set to work with and lends itself to a modeler just starting out with PE.
The kit comes with 27 opaque resin pieces and 15 transparent resin pieces for you to use on your kit. All of the pieces have pour stubs that you will have to remove before placing them on the model. The opaque pieces contain the following replacement parts or new parts for the ship:
- all new warp engines with center transparent blue parts
- new impulse engines
- pulse phaser cannons
- bussard collector in transparent red parts
- main engineering in transparent red parts
- new transparent blue plasma vents
- new clear transparent navigation deflector
All of the parts opaque and transparent are cast excellently. The product I have has no warping, bubbles, or visible imperfections at all. There is also detail inside the warp nacelles which is very cool and adds that extra realism to your build. Greenstrawberry did a stellar job with this kit.
This kit has no major deviations with the buildable product at all and kudos to Greenstrawberry for putting out another excellent kit. The few things that I picked out are nothing major and are just for reference to the builder and possible fixes for Greenstrawberry. If you are lucky enough to have a 420 scale Defiant you may want to take a look at this kit!!
We would like to thank Greenstrawberry for sending the kit over for review. If you are interested in this kit or other Greenstrawberry products please visit their site at https://www.greenstrawberry.cz
