DXM Decals 1/72 F-14

This decal sheet contains decals for 5 aircraft:

  • AD101, F-14A, BuNo 162689, 2002 (On display in USS Hornet)
  • AD101, F-14B, BuNo 162923, 1995
  • AD107, F-14B, BuNo 162910, 2004 (On display NAS Key West)
  • AD163, F-14D, BuNo 163414, 2004
  • AD165, F-14D, BuNo 164345, 2005

The sheet looks like it contains enough stencils for two aircraft, but you will need to check and count for yourself to be sure. In this scale, there are kits by Academy, Fine Molds, Fujimi, Hasegawa, and Revell, to name but a few.

The decals arrived from DXM Decals in an envelope clearly marked ‘Do not Bend’. Inside the envelope the decals were secured between 2 pieces of cardboard. The decals themselves are in a self-sealing plastic bag, with a tab at the top for hanging the bag on a sales rack in a store. There’s plenty of space in the bag so getting the decals in and out is not a problem. The bottom folds up over the bag and has a sticky stripe on it to seal it. I found that the sticky stripe tends to stick to everything, so I folded the sticky tab back on itself and sealed the bag with a second, smaller, piece of tape. This way I can put things back inside the bag a lot easier. Inside the bag are:

  • Two A4/Letter sized, double sided, colour sheet of decal placement instructions.
  • One large decal sheet. (15cm x 10.5cm)
  • Two small decal sheets. (3 cm x 3 cm)

The 2 sheets of instructions are folded in half and sit one inside the other to form a booklet with 4 pages and 8 sides. The first instruction sheet uses one half of one side for the cover. If you open the sheet you will see port and starboard views of all 5 aircraft, 3 are hi-viz and 2 are lo-viz. Part views are also shown of the inside view of the all the twin tails. Colours for the aircraft are given in Mr. Color and Humbrol, with all also having either a name or a FS number for reference. The last part of this sheet shows top and bottom of 1 of the 5 aircraft. The second instruction sheet shows the top and bottom of the other 4 aircraft. The placement of the decals is clearly shown on the images and you can also see the colour schemes of the aircraft.

The decals themselves are by Cartograph, so the quality of obviously very good. The amount of extra carrier film seems to be almost non-existent. The decals themselves seem very thin, in register and the colours seem good too. I scanned the sheet at a high resolution and all the text is readable – if your eyes are good enough! All in all, everything we have come to expect from Cartograph. One of the small sheets contains lo-viz stars and bars and the second is for the anti glare panel on the nose of one of the aircraft. I’m not sure why they’re on separate sheets though.

To summarize, this is a good quality, highly detailed decal sheet. This set is comprehensive, clearly laid out and the instructions are easy to understand. Overall, this a good quality set and well worthy of being used on your F-14A/B/D build

Many thanks to DXM Decals for the review sample. You can buy this set for $10.00 from the DXM Decals shop.
